Information for prospective students

The B.A. subject “Languages and Cultures of East Asia” can only be studied in the one-subject model. It is the only degree program in the Faculty of East Asian Studies with a standard period of study of eight semesters, during which the students earn a total of 240 credit points (CP). Students can only begin their studies in the first semester in the winter semester, as beginners' language courses are only offered in the winter semester.

Students choose one of the three East Asian languages offered by the Faculty of East Asian Studies (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) as their main language of study, for which they take the corresponding country-specific specialist courses. In the course of the degree program, students complete the language courses of another East Asian foreign language to a lesser extent.

The core area of the degree program consists of courses on the region of East Asia. In addition to East Asian Studies courses, a wide range of other courses can be taken in the elective area, which contribute to rounding off the course profile in terms of content and methodology. The degree program also includes a compulsory, self-financed study abroud program in East Asia.

We recommend that you complete the self-check (German) before deciding to study Languages and Cultures of East Asia. The result of the self-check is not relevant for enrollment. Participation is simply certified and the corresponding certificate of participation is uploaded as part of the online enrollment process. The purpose of the self-check is to give prospective students a realistic idea of studying “Languages and Cultures of East Asia”; it is therefore best for prospective students to answer as honestly as possible in order to receive helpful feedback within the self-check.
